Lepakshi is historical ancient village in Anantpur District of Andhra Pradesh located at around 15 kms from Hindupur, 120 kms from Anantpur and Bangalore. Lepakshi is culturally and spiritually rich place due to world famous shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Veerabhadra. It is believed that several great dynasty ruled in this region including Vijayanagara kings.

It is believed that well known Veerabhadra Temple was constructed by two brothers Viranna and Virupanna in Vijayanagar architectural style and has beautiful sculptures adorning the walls. There is a huge Nandi bull believed to be world’s biggest Idol of Nandi made from a single granite stone – the evidence of finest art of Vijaynagar dynasty. Lepakshi has famous sculpture of the snake on the Nagalinga along with other shrine like Papanatheswar, Raghunath, Lord Shri Ram and other deities.

Apart from the religious importance, Lepakshi is also world famous for its traditional handicraft, which is manged by Lepakshi Corporation, an enterprise of Andhra Pradesh Government. It was started in 1982 to promote handicrafts for the welfare of artisans. Banjara embroidery items, brass artefacts, woodcarvings, Kalamkari paintings and Cherial scroll paintings, large life-sized idols, cotton and jute floor mats, Kondapalli toys made from softwood etc. attract tourist for shopping. This is how Lepakshi also represents the cultural and artistic heritage of the state.

How to reach Lepakshi: It is very easily approachable through road via Hindupur. There is also availability of private - state buses and taxi - cab to reach the temple. APSRTC buses leave for Lepakshi every 30 minutes from Hindupur. The nearest railway Station is Hindupur railway Station at a distance of 12kms. The nearest Airport is Kempegowda International Airport at a distance of 68kms and Bangalore at around 100 kms.
