Brief about Kayavarohan

Kayavarohan also known as Karvan is small village in Vadodara district, Gujarat, located at national highway 8 and around 32 km from Vadodara. Kayavarohan is one of the main pilgrimages of Gujarat as this is the birth place of Lord Lakulisha, the 28th incarnation of Lord Shiva. Devotee of Lord Shiva across the India visit here as Kayavarohan is one of the 68th Teerth of Lord Shiva mentioned in Shiva Puran. Lakulish Temple is the main pilgrimage place here for devotee of Lord Shiva and follower of Lord Pashupati.

History and Religious Significance of Kayavarohan

It is believed that Kayavarohan is ancient town and existed throughout all four Yuga as per the Hinduism. As per the Holy Scriptures, Lord Shiva appeared here as manifestation Lakulish and from this place only Lord Shiva transmigrated in form of Brahmin child, so this place is known as Kavya – body and Arohan – descent, thus Kayavarohan. This place was known as Ichhapuri during Satayuga, Mayapuri in Treta Yuga, Medhavati in Dwapar Yuga and Kavya Rohan in Kaliyuga.

Kayavarohan has great significance for the followers of Pashupati or Pashupatas and followers of Lord Lakulish. As this is the place where Lord Lakulish, the 28th incarnation of Lord Shiva appeared, devotee across the India visit here throughout year. During the Ramavatara, great sage Rhishi Vishwamitra performs penance at this place and founded the Brahmeshwar Jyotirlinga here. Incarnation of Lord Shiva, Lakulish had been merged in this Shivalinga. Thus Kayavarohan had equivalent importance as the Kashi. Here the idol of Lord Shiva is in form of meditating Yogi and made up of Black stone.

Kayavarohan is center of learning of Vedas, Yagya and rituals from the ancient time. Maha Shivratri is one of the major sacred festivals which is celebrated here with devotion and thousand of devotee visits here.

Archeological Significance of Kayavarohan

As Kayavarohan is ancient town, thus surrounding area has great archeological importance as old monument, ruins, copper coins, Hindu icons, image of Kartikeyen, unique specimens etc from the 2nd century found here. During the Muslim Rule between 11th to 16th centuries lots of Shiva temple was destroyed but Shivlinga were remains there and survived. In 20th century spiritual guru, Kripalvananda had rebuilt this Lakulish temple. Archeological Survey of India has listed this place in heritage and setup a museum to preserve the ancient things.
