Chanod, the small town in Dabhoi Taluka of Vadodara district, Gujara is located on the bank of Holy River Narmada, earlier known as “Chandipur”. The holy confluence of Narmada, Orsang and Gupt Saraswati near Chanod is known as Triveni Sangam and Dakshini Prayag.

Lots of temple, Ashram and Ghat makes Chanod as pilgrimage centers along the Narmada River. Thus it is also popular as city of temples, highly sacred spot and one of the popular Asthi Visarjan place in Gujarat. Also famous as Pitru Gaya of Gujarat.

City of Temples - Chanod

Temples of the Chanod are devided in mainly two category; ancient temple and contemporary temple. Kapileshwar Mahadev believed to be 1000 years old, Shree Sheshnarayana temple around 450 years old and Shree Chandika Mata temple are ancient temple of Chanod. Kashi Vishwanath Mahadev, Dameshwar Mahadev, Balaji temple, Ramji temple, Trikamji temple and Swaminarayana temple are contemporary temple.

Various Ghat and Dakshini Prayag - Chanod

On the bank of holy River Narmada in Chanod, there are 6 Ghat namely Mallharo Ghat, Chakrapani Ghat, Yama Ghat, Harijan Ghat, Kapileshwar Ghat and Swami Ghat, out of these six most famous and historical one is Mallharo Ghat. It is believed that Malharo Ghat was built around 1000 years with 64 steps and 60 feet in width where Narmada River flows with full force in width of approximately 1500 feet.

As per the local people, Mallharao Ghat is named after Malhar Rao Holkar the father in law of Ahilyabai Holkar of Maheshwar, had built this huge Ghat near Triveni Sangam. Once Malhar Rao’s most trusted minister stole large amount from state treasury and then found hidden under the sacred Tulsi Plant. Thus he had decided to use this money in bulding the Ghat. Visitors can reach to Triveni Sangam by boat from this this Ghat for performing the ritual.

Future development plan by Gujarat Government and Pavitra Yatradham Vikash Board for Chanod

Gujarat Government has decided to develop Chanod as tourist friendly pilgrimage with various facilities like washroom, changing area, smaller steps for senior citizen and chain to be place in river for safety of devotee during holy bath. Also Chanod is very close to Sardar Sarovar, it is under planning to develop Chanod as part of Statue of Unity tourist circuit.

Apart from Statue of Unity – the tallest statue of world, other holy places like Karnali – Kuber Bhandari temple , Kayavarohan – Lakulish Mahadev Mandir and Poicha – Nilkanth Dham Swaminarayana Temple are located near the chanod where devotee and tourist must have to visit.
