Rajgir, the ancient historical city of Bihar is located at just 95 km from Patna, 60 km from Gaya and 15 km from Nalanda. Rajgir or Rajgriha, known as Girivraj in ancient time is believed as the first capital of kingdom of Magadha. It holds high spiritual importance for Buddism, Jainism and Hinduism as it was birthplace of the 20th Jain Tirthankar Munisuvrata, and also closely associated with the Lord Mahavira and Lord Buddha. Rajgir means the abode of Kings of City of Kings which was mentioned in Mahabharat, the great epic of India and several religious text of Buddism and Jainism. As per the latest record found it is believed that Rajgir was founded by Ajatshatru, the son of king Bimbisara’s, around 3000 years ago. The city is divided in two main parts, the old fortified city which lies in the valley surrounded by seven hills (Chhatha, Ratna, Saila, Sona, Udaya, Vaibhara and Vipula) and the new city established by Ajatshatru.

Rajgir remained the capital of Magadha Empire till the 5th century BC and then Ajatshatru had shifted his capital to Pataliputra, the modern day Patna

It is believed that Gautam Buddha had spent many months in meditation on Gridhakut, the Hill of Vultures. Lord Mahavira spent about 14 years of his life in Rajgir and its nearby regions. Thus Rajgir becomes important site of Buddhism and Jainism across the world

These places are Bimbisara’s Jail, Jarasangh’s Akhara, the place where Bheema had Kusti with Jarasangh, Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Brahmkund, Son Bhandar Cave belongs to Jainism, The Vulture Peak, also known as the Holy Eagle Peak or Gridhakuta, the Buddha's favorite retreat in Rajgir, Japanese Stupa, Makhdum Kund, Veerayatan Jain Museum, Pawapuri, Laxmi Narayana Mandir etc.
