Deoghar, the major pilgrimage destination, home to one of twelve Jyotirlinga and one of 51 Shakti Peethas is major city and headquarter of Deoghar district of Jharkhand. It is home of ancient Jyotirlinga temple of Baba Baidyanath of Lord Shiva which makes this place highly sacred and attracts millions of devotee and tourist across the world throughout the year. Deoghar is also spelled and pronounced as Deogarh or Devghar which literal mean is House or Abode of God. Deoghar also called as BaidyanathDham or Baba Baidyanath is located on bank of Ajay River and holds great historical and religious importance from thousands of year. As per the legend, here at Deoghar, demon king had took stoppage while carrying Lord Shiva to Sri Lanka and then failed to bring Lord to his home, this is how Lord remained here from thousands of year.

During the Shravan month, millions of devotees bring holy water Ganga Jal of river Ganga for the Linga from around 108 kms on foot from Sultanganj in Kanwads, and hence devotee known as Kanwariyas, and this march known as Kanwar Yatra, to perform the holy ritual of Rudrabhishek on Shivlinga. On reaching here, the kanwarias first take a dip in the Shivaganga to purify themselves, and then enter the Baba Baidyanath temple, where the Ganges water is offered to the Jyotirlinga. This pilgrimage continues for entire Shravan month which makes this event Shravani Mela as the longest religious fair in the world.

You can see the culture and tradition of Jharkhand during the seasonal fairs held on the festival like Shivratri, Shravana Sombari, Dussehra, Makar Sankranti, Durga Puja, Gopashtami and Shri Panchami at Deoghar.
