Tirunelveli also called Tinnevelly or Nellai, the ancient historical city and district place of Tamil Nadu, India is major city and temple town located on river Tambraparni. The name Tirunelveli is combination of the three Tamil words, ‘Thiru – Nel – Veli’ meaning holy paddy fence. As per the Archaeologists opinion, the city was in existence more than 4000 years. As per the history, Tirunelveli was believed to be second capital of the Pandya kings, and Madurai was its primary capital. After that city remains as importance during the rule of the Chola kingdom and the Vijayanagar empire.

Tirunelveli is home to several historical, sacred temple like Sri Kanthimathi Nellaiappar. There are several tales associated with temple and city. One of it is, associated with Vedasarma, the great devotee of Shiva. He used to collect paddy and offer to Lord Shiva here, One day he spread out the paddy to dry under the Sun before the Lord, and went for bath in Tamiraparani. When he was bathing, heavy rain fall started. Then Vedasarma rushed to collect the paddy but miracle happens and not a single paddy was wet and the rain had made a fence around the paddy and Sun was shining brightly over the place to safeguard the paddy. After this incident Lord Shiva came to be known as Lord Nel Veli Nathar or Nellaiappar and the region was renamed as Tiru-Nel-Veli.

As per another legend says that Lord Vishnu had attend the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Kanthimathi. It is said that Agastya worshipped Lord Shiva in a bamboo grove and by Rama after killing Mareecha. This is one of the Panch Sabha Temples means the Lord Shiva had visited five of the places where he displayed his dance and today it is called as Panch Sabha so, Nellaiappar is one of the Panch Sabha Temples (copper).
