Bhuj, the most important city and gateway of Kutch Gujarat, also district headquarter is ancient historical place located on feet of Bhujiyo Dunger and near Great Rann of Kutch. The history of Bhuj is found dated back to thousands of years, it is said that Bhuj was rule by Naga Chief - divine deities of half-human half-serpent beings that lived in the Patala loka and can occasionally take human form as well. The hill where last Naga King Bhujanga lived known as Bhujia Hill and Bhuj was established on foot of hill Bhujia Dunger. Bhuj is also associated with Mahabharata time and also witness the Indus valley civilization, recently Dholavira declared as UNESCO World heritage site.

As per the latest record found, Bhuj was founded by Rao Hamir in 1510 and Rao Khengarji I had made it capital of state Kutch 1549. After this Bhuj was ruled by various ruler including British then after Independence of India it was merged in Bombay state and finally in Gujarat in 1960 as Kutch district.

The surrounding region of Bhuj holds great historical, religious, heritage and cultural values from thousands of year. Bhuj is home to one of the first Swaminarayan Sampraday temples, built in 1822.
