Kanchipuram also known as Kanchi or Kancheepuram or Kanjeevaram or Kanchipura is one of the seven sacred cities of India and major pilgrimage destination of Hinduism, located on the banks of the Vegavathy River. Kanchipuram is one of the most ancient historical city of South India and headquarter of Kanchipuram district, the name is combination of two word, Kanchi means Brahma and Puram means residential place. As it is home to marvelous, old temple with excellent Dravidian style architecture, which makes it spiritual souls and major pilgrimage center and thus it is famous as temple city of India. Along with Hinduism, it is also popular for Buddhism and Jainism as well where Sri Sankaracharya, Appar, Siruthonder and the great Buddhist Bikshu, Bodhidharma once lived and worked here in region. Kanchipuram was once the capital of the Pallava dynasty and there were beautiful temples built between 6th and 7th centuries during rule of Pallavas. It was also the center of learning for Sanskrit and Tamil scholars. Apart from Pallavas, great ruler of Chhola King and Vijaynagara king had rule over this religious region.

Kanchipuram is one of the sacred seven cities also known as Sapta Puri of India along with Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Varanasi, Ujjain and Dwarka. The region is divided into Shiva Kanchi, Vishnu Kanchi and Jain Kanchi and there are around 15 temple of the 108 Divya Desham of supreme Lord Vishnu.

Kanchipuram is popular for silk industries, hand woven silk saree and Zari work across the world.

As per the legend region was capital of Chola during the during the 2nd century BCE then from the it was capital of Pallava from 3rd to 9th century CE then from 10th to the 13th century, it served as the late Chola government headquarters. From 15th to the 17th century, it was rule by Muslim and Maratha and then it was ruled by the British.
