Mount Abu the only hill station of Rajasthan and North West India, is located in Aravalli mountain Range, in Sirohi district of Rajasthan near the border of state Gujarat. The average height Mount Abu is 1,219 mtr's above sea level and highest peak of mountain is Guru Shikhar at 1722 mtr. Thus, Mount Abu becomes the retreat in the desert land of Rajasthan as it is home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls, lush green forests, marvellous temples and heritage of ancient forts and havelis. The mountain forms unique rocky plateau of around 22km long by 9 km wide. In the Vedic time Mount Abu was known as Arbudaanchal or Arbudaranya and 'Abu' is a tiny name of this ancient name. It is also believed that Abu as son of Himalaya or Arbooda the hill of wisdom, Abu is named after the Arbuda – powerful serpent which saved the life of Nandi – the sacred bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva. It is also believed that Abu serves as retreat of great sage Vashistha – one of the Saptarishi after his difference with sage Vishvamitra. Another tale associated with Mount Abu is, grea sage Vashistha had performed a Yagya at the peak of Mount Abu for the protection of morality on earth. And due to his worship, a youth arose from the Yagya Kunda -the first Agnivansha Rajput. Mount Abu was also served as the home for lots of Rishi to perform meditation.
