Tejpur, the city known for rich traditions of mythology, folklore, and legends, is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam and is home to the lush green valleys and snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. History of Da Parbatia, Tezpur
The antiquities found at the Da Parbatia are inferred to have been from a temple complex built between the fifth or sixth centuries. On the basis of the moldings of the torso and its architectural style, historians have inferred that the terracotta plaques are not later than the sixth century and the altered form of motifs noted in Assam confirms this assessment.
This type of architectural feature, particularly in the molds of figurines of the ruins, is seen in many parts of North India, which belonged to the Gupta period. Further confirmation of this dating is provided by the carvings of the river Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, which are akin to the Greek architecture. The decorative elements of the ruins also have close similarity with those seen in Orissa’s temples.
During the Ahom period in the state, a Shiva temple was built with bricks over the ruins of an ancient Gupta period temple. When the Ahom period temple was destroyed during the Assam Earthquake of 1897, the remains of Gupta period temple were exposed but only in the form of a door frame made of stone. Epigraphic evidence and ancient literature found here supplement the ruins seen scattered around the area. This also confirms that in the pre-Ahom period, Gupta art extended into the early medieval period.

The frameworks of the doors with stunning carvings and imprints are believed to be the part of the architecture patterns famous during the early typical Gupta School of sculpture. The Da Parbatia Temple has one of the supreme artworks and portrayals which have been magnificently carved in its doors and walls of the temple. The door jambs are ornamented with the figurines of two Hindu mythological Goddesses, Ganga and Yamuna, who are seen standing with grace and dignity adoring garlands in their hands as a sign of welcoming people inside the temple. The entire door frame of the temple has been beautifully embellished and decorated with intricate designs and floral patterns.
Due to its ancient majestic and exquisite beauty, the Da-Parbatia Temple has been announced as a protected site under the authority and undertaking of the Archaeological Survey of India.
