Hindu mythology states that Ravana (the king of Lanka) was the most appreciated disciple of Lord Shiva. He performed deep reparation for many years to please Shiva. Satisfied with his absolute fidelity and melodious hymns that Ravana sang for him, Shiva asked Ravana for a desire. Ravana asked Shiva to come with him to Lanka, astonishing the other Hindu deities. Shiva agreed to come with him but only in the manifestation of Shiva Linga. He also put one condition in front of Ravana while traveling to Lanka, if Ravana ever places the Shiva Linga anywhere, then it will establish itself there forever and could never be taken out again. Ravana agreed to this and started his journey. Although, in the midway, Ravana felt tired and wanted to take some rest. He noticed the Trikut Pahar and came to rest on the top. Tired Ravana was aware of Shiva’s condition, so he kept searching for people, who could grasp the Linga for some time, but he didn’t find anyone. Later on, he turned into a monster to have a better view of the place when he saw a little boy and asked for help. The boy was the manifestation of Lord Ganesha. He agreed to help Ravana only on one condition that Ravana would come back to the Linga after 3 screams. Ravana had no other option so he agreed to this and moved forward. After a few hours when he returned, he became choleric noticing that the boy left the Linga on the ground. He tried hard to uproot the Linga but failed. Sapped Ravana hit the Linga in disgust and left the place. This is why the Shiva Linga of Deoghar is known as Ravaneshwar Shiva Linga.
The three peaks of the Trikut hills are entitled with the names of the Three Hindu deities – Bramha, Vishnu, and Shiva.
