Kolaramma temple, historical ancient sacred site located in heart of the city Kolar of Karnataka India is holding the great religious importance from more than 1000 years. Kolaramma temple is dedicated to goddess Kolaramma, the form of goddess Parvathi and also the presiding deity of the Kolar from ancient time. Dravidian architecture style Kolaramma temple was built by Chola rulers king Rajendra Chola I in 11th century which stands even today after thousands years with same religious importance. This temple is one to the main holy site of Kolar along with Someshwar Temple of Lord Shiva. It is said that the royal family of Mysore used to visit the temple and get the blessings of the Goddess.
The temple has two shrines but common mandapa is shared between these shrines and the main temple faces east and the other shrine faces north. Chelamma also known as scorpion goddess is another deity in the temple. It is said that a person will be saved from the bites of a scorpion if he regularly worshipped at the shrine. You can observe several battle scene, inscription in local language, horses, elephants, cars and soldiers depicted on stones. Kolaramma temple premise is L-shaped pilgrimage site that was built in the Dravida Vimana architectural style.
Temple has an ascetic mahadvara ornamented with Gajalakshmi in green stone on the lintel while its pillars inside have sculptured figures on all sides. The inner mahadvara is connected to a prakara. Hundi, also known as a well is another key attraction here at Kolaramma temple that is used to collect offerings from devotees. Tradition to offer at least one coin in this handi followed since hundreds of years. Eight armed goddess Durga or Mahisasurmardini known as Kolaramma here is worshipped by looking at the mirror placed opposite to the main idol. Also special puja observed on every Tuesday and Friday. Also you can see unique aspect of temple, Saptamatrikas - seven divine mothers installed in specific position in garbhgriha of temple. The famous Karage Festival is celebrated here with great zeal here when thousands of devotee and tourist visits here.
Kolaramma Temple Darshan timings are from morning 8.00 am to 12.30 pm, evening 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
On Friday darshan starts from 8.00 am to 2.30 pm and 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm.
