Sharada Peetham also well known as Sringeri Math is first of four Math established by Shri Adi Guru Shankaracharya, located in Sringeri, Karnataka, India. Jagadguru Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada identified this special place and setup first Math in eight century to promote the Sanatan Dharma and Advaita (non-dualism). The other three Math are in Dwarka, Gujarat, Jagannath Puri, Odisha and Badrinath, Uttarakhand, thus four Math in each direction. Sringeri Math holds special significance due to first peetham and also brings the great history and lineage of Adi Shankaracharya. Since then city developed around the Sharada Peetham and Shardamba Temple. Sureshwaracharya was the first pontiff of this Sharada Peetham and currently Sri Bharati Tirtha is 36th Acharya of Shardha Peetham. Goddess Sharda or Saraswati, who is goddess of knowledge is the main deity here in Sharda Peetham. Sharada Peetham or Sringeri Matt is also known as Dakṣinamnaya Sri SharadaPeetham as it is located in south India.
As per the legend once Adi Shankaracharya was walking on the banks of River Tunga, he saw a cobra protecting a frog in labor from the burning heat with its hood. Adi Shankaracharya thought that if the natural enemies can protect each other here then it must be spiritual significant place. Thus Jagadguru had setup the seat of learning, this is how Sharada Peetham, the first of the four great Peethams of India established and even today after 1200 years stay as importance as it was during the time of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya. Also Jagadguru, teacher of world had lived here for 12 years.
