History of Ashok Edicts, Girnar, Junagadh
Ashoka’s Rock Edicts is located on the way from Junagadh to Girnar Hill, around 3 km away from Bhavnath Taleti. Ashoka’s edicts are the inscription on the rocks in Brahmi script and Pali language, which claims to be oldest script used in India. Around 14 edicts are written on the rock which is approximate 75 feet in circumference. It is believed that, this had been written during great king Ashoka rule and in 256 BC. It is believed that, this inscription are one of the main edict of Ashoka.
This instruction are mainly related to Dharma, moral values, peace etc mainly related to Buddhism and from this Ashoka wanted to established moral values in society. This was found in 1837 by Dr. Bhagwanlal Indraji. Also famous historian Pro, Vallabhji had studied a lot on Ashok Shilalekh.
These inscriptions are mainly related with three different rulers at different time. These are Ashoka during 273 to 232 BC, King Rudradama in 150 AD, and King Skand Gupt in 455 AD. Inscription during Rudrama and Skand Gupt ruler is in Devnagari script and Sanskrit language. Also it had been mentioned that in 456 AD, Sudarshan Lake was rebuilt by Parndatt and Chakrapalit, which was damaged due to heavy flood in River Sonrekha and Palashini.
