Buddhist Caves, Uparkot Fort, Junagadh
Uparkot Caves are ancient man made caves and part of Junagadh Buddhist Caves group located in eastern part of Junagadh in Uparkot Fort. It is near Adi Kadi Vav and carved in 2nd to 3rd century AD, with two storey structure and three different chamber for bathing, coocking and meditation.These are not the caves but rooms of carved in stone around 300 feet deep and used for the Buddist Monks.
It is believed that Buddhist Caves are carved during the rule of King Ashoka. The architecture of this caves are such unique that warmth of sun is replaced by a cool shade. At the lowest level near echo room, the acoustic properties were such that sligh sound can covert with great amplified. Khapara Kodia Caves are the oldest caves out of group of Buddhist Caves near the Sudarshan Lake out side the Uparkot.
