The Rani Sati Temple or Rani Sati Dadi Temple located at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan is one of the largest temple dedicated to Rani Sati, Rajasthani Lady who is believed to have lived between the 13th & 17th centuries and is commemorated for her act of sati on her husband’s death. Rani Sati also well known as Narayana Devi or Dadiji had great history associated with Mahabharat time.
As per the legend, Narayani had wish of being married to Abhimanyu – son of Arjun and Subhadra of Mahabharat time and her desire to be sati in her next life. Lord Krishna granted boon and in next life she was born as the daughter of Gursamal Birmewal in the village of Dokwa in Rajasthan and was named Narayani and Abhimanyu was born in Hissar as a son of Jaliram Jalan and named Tandhan Jalan. Then Tandan and Narayani got married and lived a peaceful life. Tandan had beautiful horse which was liked by son of king of Hissar but Tandhan refused to give his precious horse to the king's son. Thus king’s son had tried forcefully to get horse and fight with Tandan. During this fight, Tandan had killed the king’s son, thus king of Hissar became very angry and killed the Tandan in front of Narayani in war. Then Narayani, fights with the king with bravery and kills King. After killing king she decided to be Sati after here husband and requested Ranaji - caretaker of the horse to prepare arrangements for her to be set ablaze along with her husband's cremation. This is how Narayani became popular as Rani Sati and local people started worshipping her with great respect and devotion.
Rani Sati’s exact lifetime is not known, but the Temple – which is the largest in India devoted to Rani Sati – is said to be around 400 years old and is known for not holding any paintings or statues of any gods. Rather a trishula, or trident, represents Rani Sati.
The temples has two courtyards, around which 300 rooms offer shelter to pilgrims. The main hall is made up from marble with elaborate silver repoussé work before the inner sanctum. There’s a tile-and mirror mosaic on the ceiling and a frieze on one wall which mentioned the story of Rani Sati.
Rani Sati temple in Jhunjhunu is managed by Marwari Temple Board from Kolkata and It is one of the wealthiest Temple trusts in India after the Tirupati Balaji Temple. This temple has a history of more than 400 years and is an indication to feminine bravery and spirit which certainly captures the attention of all devotee and tourist.
Portrait of Rani Sati dadiji is placed in the pradhan mandap. The temple is constructed from white marble and has colourful wall paintings. In Rani Sati Temple complex, there is also the Lord Hanuman Temple, Sita Temple, Thakur Ji temple, Lord Ganesha Temple and Shiva Temple. A huge statue of Lord Shiva is located in the centre of the complex and is surrounded by green gardens.
The special Poojan utsav is arranged on the Amavasya of Hindu month Bhadrapada.
