Ghanteswari Temple is one of the popular and sacred place located in Chiplima which is around 30 kms from Sambalpur, district headquarter of Sambalpur, in western region of Odisha. This place is treated as the heart of Chiplima. The Temple is situated on the bank of the sacred river Mahanadi. As the name signifies it is dedicated to the Goddess Ghanteswari or the deity of Bells and you can see bells everywhere in temple campus. A bridge is constructed between Sambalpur and Chiplima for making the way easy for all the visitors. The significance of this unique temple is, devotee offers bells to goddess on fulfilment of their wishes.
The temple is said to be as “lighthouse without the light”. It was working as a lighthouse for the sailors in past. There are very big as well as thousands of small bells on this spot. When there is a high wind the bells creates enormous sound which made the navigators aware so they don’t strike towards the end. The Mahanadi is the conglomeration of the three waters which creates a very high tides and forming a whirlpool. At pasty many boats were drowned very easily near to this place. Today, the Hirakud Dam has been constructed which makes the place safe.
The place is the picnic spot for all the peoples in Odisha. People love to visit here to see the thousands of bells being placed. The visitors offers bells here when their wishes are being completed.
