As per the Shiva Purana, there was a time in India, people were devout but became lazy and inactive so forgot about the devotion and Moksha. During this period, extremely dominant demon lady Daruka got the excessive power from Ma Devi Shakti.
She had been started challenging towards devotion of Lord and destroy the cultural values with help her husband named Daruk in surrounding area. Few sad and frustrated Brahman approaches great sage Auoryamuni, under guidance of sage they started working hard and awake moral values in people.
They perform penance of Lord Shiva and blessed with extreme power from Lord Shiva. This place is Nageshwar and “Kartrutva” is main emotion behind this Jyotirlinga.
The demon couple run away towards the sea coast from this place and created new kingdom around sea. One day demon couple captured the traveler along with boat and imprisoned all. Among this prisoner, Supriya was great devotee of Lord Shiva and started chanting Lord Shiva for help.
Thus Lord Shiva blessed with Supriya and appeared in form of Jyotirlinga and killed demon Daruk. This scared Daruka prayed Parvati for mercy thus Parvati saved her from Shiva’s anger. From this it is believed that Lord Shiva and Ma Devi Parvati, reside at temple and worshipped as Nageshwar and Nageshwari.

Once he was singing devotional song of Lord Shiva in front of Jyotirlinga, thus other devotee could not see the face of Lord Shiva. Thus they asked to move aside but he did not change the position and continue singing. Then other devotee carried him to southern part of campus, then they surprisingly found that Jyotirlinga had also moved to south.
