Joshimath also known as the winter seat of the Badrinath or Jyotirmath is a city and a Municipal board of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand at height of 1875 mtrs. Joshimath is the base for several Himalayan mountain climbing expeditions, trekking trails and pilgrims center like Badrinath. Every year many devotees come here to pay obeisance to the Shri Adi Shankar Acharya monastery, manifested in the town itself. It is one of the four monasteries that were establishes by Adi Guru Shankar Acharya in the 8th century AD. Tourists are attracted towards the Tree called Kalpvriksha, the oldest tree which is 1200 years old along with many Hindu shrines that are located in the city.
The important attractions of Joshimath are the fascinating temples of Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesh, Hanuman, Naudevi, Tapovan –hot spring water and Surya. During winters, the town become the seat of Lord Badrinath as the idol is brought down from Badrinath temple to Vasudeva Temple at Joshimath. Devotee who are visiting the sacred site of Hemkund Sahib have to cross Joshimath.
The Joshimath becomes the most visited place during winter known as winter Char Dham Yatra. Joshimath is the place from where trekking towards Auli take place. A cable car takes one from Joshimath to Auli where the visitor and the professional skier can ski in snowy slopes during the winter season. The Famous national valley park located near Gobindghat is just 26kms from Joshimath, so one can visit the park having rich variety of flora.
How to reach – nearest Railway station is Rishikesh Railway station which is just 24kms away from Joshimath city. The nearest air connectivity is in Dehradun of about 300kms far. You can opt for private or state buses or via taxi to reach city from Delhi, Punjab or Dehradun.
