Legend, Natural Environment and Travel Guide of Chandra Shila near Tungnath, Uttarakhanda
Chandrashila is the peak which is located a kilometer away from Tungnath Temple. The Chandrashila means the Moon Rock. The Rock is situated 4000 meters above the sea level. There are Legends associated with this place. According to Hindu Mythology, it is believed that the Lord Rama after defeating the Demon Ravan, he came to Chandrashila for mediating. Chandranath Mountain on which the Tungnath Temple located from where you can see the all the major summits of western and eastern Uttarakhand and panoramic view of Himalaya and feel like the heaven.
Some of the people also say that the God Moon, Chandradev had performed penance at Chandrashila for years. Chandrashila trek is one of the most famous trek in India. The trek starts from the Chopta which heads towards Tungnath and after worshipping at Tungnath a kilometer away is the Chandrashila peak. The trek route is of 5 kms and it is said to be one of the shortest trek among the Temple of Uttarakhand. The Chandrashila peak offers a great scenic view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar peak and Chaukambha peak.
How to reach – Chopta is well connected road and can be visited via Rishikesh which is around 160kms at a distance. You can also hire taxis or private/state buses from Dehradun or Delhi or Haridwar. The nearest Railway route is in Rishikesh which is at a distance of 200kms and the nearest Airport is in Dehradun at a distance of 226 kms.
