History and Stories related to Danknath Mahadev – Dankpur (Present Dakor)
From the Mahabharat time, surrounding area of Dakor was dense jungle, known as Hidamba van. It was very peaceful place with rivers, lake, big trees etc, thus it was always an attraction for the Sages and Tapasvi who desire to perform penance of Supreme Lord. There was the ashram of Great Rhishi Dankmuni in this area. Dankmuni performed hard penance to please the Lord Shiva at this place. Lord Shiva blessed with his penance and asked for boon. Dankmuni requested Lord Shiva to stay here so Lord Shiva touches Trishul on the land and Shivlinga came out. Thus the name of this place was famous as Danknath Mahadev from the name of Dankmuni and surrounding area was known as Dankpur, the old name of present Dakor.
Once Lord Shree Krishna visited at the ashram of Dankmuni and pleased with kindness of Dankmuni. Then Dankmuni asked Lord Shree Krishna to stay here with at Dankpur. Lord Shree Krishna gave blessing and promised to come to Dankpur during the Kalyuga. This is how Lord Shree Krishna was invited to stay at Dakor Long back in Dwaparyuga.
Danknath Mahadev is situated on bank of Gomti Ghat in Dakor from ancient time. The name of Danknath Mahadev or Dankeshwar is come from the great Rushi Dankmuni. Dankmuni did Tapascharya of Lord shiva in the jungle of dankpur which is old name of Dakor. Dankmuni get the blessing of Lord Shiva and touch Trishul on the land of dakpur and then the Shivling is come out. Now this place is known as Danknath Mahadev.
