Importance of Parikrama of sacred River Narmada
In India, Parikrama of pilgrimage place is very popular and well known rituals. Devotee walk on feet in circular direction from left to rights side of pilgrimage place is known as Parikrama or Pradakshina. Parikrama is very important at each sacred place in Sanatan Dharma but quite popular for Vraja Mandal, Ayodhya, Narmada, Govardhan, Girnar, Mount Kailash etc. We Indian believes that water is not just important for its life- support characteristics but holy Rivers are worshipped as Goddess and Mother. Holy bath in the waters of the sacred Rivers and Parikrama is believed to remove all sins, helps in attaining salvation and having key religious significance. Most of the ancient city of India like Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Nasik, Patna, Ujjain etc are located on the banks of the holy Rivers. Sacred River Narmada also knonw as Reva in locals is fifth largest River of India and one of the eight holiest river. Thus the Narmada Parikrama is one of the most devout things for Hindu to perform. Narmada River flows in the North direction near Garudeshwar - Tilakwada to Rampura. The journey is roughly 2,600 km and takes three to four months to finish on foot. During the Parikrama devotee has to pass through many small and big temple, Ashrams, Ghat for holy bath, hill, canal, villages, tribal area etc. Thousands of devotee performs the Parikrama of Narmada every year during the Chaturmas specially and enjoy the unforgettable experience of life.
